New Puppy Care & Training Guide
This is so exciting! Your sweet, loving poodle pup will love you for the rest of its life and can be the best friend you ever had and the Love of Your Life if you raise it right.
Lots of conscientious Puppy Parents ask us what they need for their puppy and we are happy to answer all of your questions:
The most important thing you need for you and your new pup to enjoy a lifetime of happiness is to know how to train it! Here are a few wonderful ways to learn more about that
Option 1
Binge watch Cesar Millan. The proverbial "Dog Whisperer" is a gold mine of tips and tricks on how to train dogs. He provides valuable insight into how they think & how to effectively communicate with them in a way they instinctively understand and respond well to.
Option 2
Read The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete. These monks support their brotherhood breeding German Shepherds and have composed an outstanding guidebook outlining how to be the best puppy parent possible.
Option 3
Hire a personal trainer or enroll in puppy training classes near you. This is a great way to meet other puppy parents and get personal guidance and individualized attention.
Feeding, Grooming and Health Care are also very important for your puppy. Here's our official take on those common topics:
Feeding
You will want to feed your puppy three times a day when you first bring it home, gradually transitioning it to two meals a day as it grows. Always provide fresh water, and avoid sudden diet changes to prevent tummy upset. See our current feeding schedule and puppy milk recipe.
Grooming
Brush your Poodle several times a week to prevent mats, and start nail trims, ear cleaning, and baths early so your puppy learns to enjoy grooming. For haircuts, a professional groomer can create fabulous fun styles! We like to clip our own; these clippers work well.
Health
We vaccinate our puppies against Parvo (at least two shots) and leave all other Vaccination decisions up to the new owner. We also supply a complete Health Record of all treatments your puppy has received prior to its adoption. Since wild pigs are rampant in Hawaii, we also strongly recommend monthly antiparasitics like Simparica Trio.
Socialization
Gently expose your puppy to new people, sounds, surfaces, and friendly dogs during the critical socialization window. Positive experiences now build a confident, well-adjusted adult dog.
Safety First
Puppy-proof your home by securing cords, toxic plants, small objects, and harmful foods. Use a crate or safe playpen when you cannot supervise, and always use a leash or fenced yard outdoors.
Healthy Routines
Puppies thrive on routine. Consistent meal times, potty breaks, play sessions, and bedtime help them feel secure. Expect plenty of naps — growing puppies need 18–20 hours of sleep a day.
